Sonnet for a birthday

I was born and under me

was a sheet of vinyl laid in such a way

to ensure no germs could pass beneath

the sticky black adhesive that held it in place

onto a thin layer of wood

placed because the room might move but the

floor shouldn't

despite another layer of mastic tarry
and absorbed into the portland cement base riddled

with chromeless steel  mesh failing to shield gravity

resting upon a bed of manmade gravel

in a hole dug in the loam and clay

turned by a silver shovel on a crisply autumn day

a decade before my conception.

Unshackled

This is a picture of a sex organ.

Tunnel vision

People often accept the analogy of Adam and Eve’s partaking of the fruit of knowledge as  a description of the moment in which humans achieved self awareness.

An assult of spelling

Hard letters--no hard consonants

clicking in ways that make your tongue

Beat against the teeth until pulpy.

 

But it is the words, not the letters that are like throwing stones into a frozen pond.

A kindle of hope

To build a fire

you take shredded bark

a match

and an intent for heat.

 

Start the flames slowly

tenderly blowing on the sparks

encouraging them to grow

while feeding it’s growing appetite.

 

When the flames begin to

assert themselves

heap on dry wood

and watch your fire

devour

and

heat.

Stalking the fluffy

Often, humans will take something that’s really dangerous and make it into something that is meant to amuse. It might seem that this is an example of courage, but not necessarily so. It actually just reveals the nature of humans and their desire to master their surroundings.

After I took this picture, I wished to actually dropkick a domestic cat into a nearby pond. Fortunately, Smokey Robinson convinced me to not do so. I would have been scratched.

A devotion

Sometimes modern society makes a path in what used to be open countryside in such a way as to make our rubber feet faster.

Gets better with age

I firmly believe that the United States needs to create an award called “The Jimmy Carter ex-President award.

Blood spilled

I could tear flesh with my teeth

Sharpened by string that I run through daily

Blood of hygene running down my chin

Staining my shirt

My wrists

My feet.

No place like home

Sometimes progress can seem backwards.
